Rachel Saxer is a multidisciplinary artist currently living and working in Oakland, CA. Saxer’s work seeks to explore the relationships between femininity, power, softness, codependency, and resilience. Inspired deeply by her grandmothers, Saxer began sewing at a young age and feels that sewing was a covert rebellion for the women in her family. She desires to expand upon this lineage and uses raw materials traditionally associated with women’s crafts to surface the power they have held for generations. She also incorporates different types media in the form of photography, video, and sound to disrupt and disassociate the viewer from something familiar or pleasurable to create a commentary about modern living and expectations.
